Painting weights

I have been painting weights on my character, and they all just disappear and go back to where they started.... WHY?? Nothings been ''held''

Ive tried doing it when in the component editor as well and it just reloads joints that i previously zeroed out. Its so frustrating and Ive now wasted about two days. Help anyone please!

  2. yes i replied jon, i already set the max influences to 5 at the start, so none of what you wrote really applies. any other suggestions?

  3. i dont really understand the problem, but the following might be reasons:

    1) The fact that nothing is being held is the problem - to my knowledge when you initially set the max influences to 1 when applying the smooth skin bind its so that the weights dont get distributed everywhere, then in the attribute editor when you set them to 5 again without pressing the update weights button (as that makes the first step obsolete) you allow for the weights to be smoothed out. You need to hold all weights after this except 2 or maybe three between shich you smooth the falloff.

    2) You havnt changed the value of Max Influences from 1 to 5 (without clicking update weights, just hit Enter on the keyboard)in the SkinCluster# tab in the attribute editor. If its still at 1 this would explain why the weights are 'locked' to 1 influence and would jump back or not be able to smooth out.

    3) youve edited the model after skinning, i.e. smoothing or adding edges / vertices etc.

I think the second one might be the thing though. Let us know how it goes. all the best.
