New Designers Participants Announced!

New Designers Participants Announced;

Jon Stewart (Kiiro Blade/Medusa)

Heather Young (Burt)

James Garner (Sound of Thunder)

David Keefe (Timothy Winters)

Pol Winandy (Kiiro Blade)

For those who haven’t been selected for New Designers 2010 there will be obvious disappointment, but it’s important to remember that selection for ND doesn’t correspond to the aggregate percentage of your degree award (i.e. second year marks + dissertation + minor + major). New Designers is a graduate show – not a degree show. The UCA degree show – at which all student work will be exhibited – is on from 21st – 24th June, with the private view on the evening of the 24th.

Selected students need to provide a comprehensive collection of ‘pipeline’ images – (original sketches, concept paintings, storyboards) – at 300dpi. Images are for screen-printing, so they should be greyscale, cleaned-up, with an emphasis on graphical boldness, expressiveness of mark-making and good use of negative space. All images are to be screen-printed in a single colour onto white canvas so need to be strong, striking and impactful. We also need wireframe images (black on white) of your characters, environments, and props for turning into screen-printed imagery.

Students need to supply this imagery on disc by Tuesday 8th June at the latest, as there is much to organize and little time in which to do it!

Selected students need to attend a meeting on Monday June 14th at 11am in the CGAA baseroom to discuss the event and its organization.

  2. Phil or Alan,

What do you need from us for the degree show at the uni? When do we need to be in on that week?

  5. Okay - firstly @ Leanne - the degree show; your work will be playing in Lecture Theatre 1 for the duration of the show: the night of the 24th there'll be a big buffet in the refectory, a bar, live music etc - and all of the courses will have their shows; it's always a lovely night, great atmosphere and very busy with people... I hope to see everyone there; in terms of the actual content, we'll set up a playlist in lecture theatre 1, so we just need the finished work - and Leanne, I'd like to include your minor project too; if you need to tweak, then do so.

    secondly @ Dan

"lets face if your not in the new designers show you might as well quit now that's what I'm doing"

Oh come on! I know you're disappointed, but the idea that your potential resides entirely in a 3 day London trade show is patently ridiculous! Perhaps I'll bring in my collection of rejection letters from every major UK publisher to convince you that a life in the creative industries is not for the faint hearted. I finished my first novel in 2000, and I have another manuscript sitting on an agent's desk somewhere in Edinburgh; I fully expect that book to be knocked back too, but am I less of a 'writer' simply because my stuff isn't 'out there' yet? No - I write because it's what I want and because it drives me; because I like characters and story-telling. I don't believe for one moment that your interest in film/animation/characters is suddenly going to dry up because of a knock-back...

At risk of giving you a life lesson when you're still raw and reactionary, your real potential resides, not in your participation or not at ND 2010, but rather what you do with other 52 weeks of the year (and the 52 after that, and the 52 after that). Whether you like it or not, you have more to learn and further to grow - and you owe yourself the opportunity to evolve. Of course, regarding the UCA degree show, it's your choice whether you participate, but I think it would be a great shame if you were to decide on a no-show.

  6. I will tweek the final animation for the major, I am glad you want to include that as I feel that is most accomplished piece. I will have it to you as soon as possible. Is there a cut off date for the final edit to be to you?

I regards to the show (mainly the night of the 24th) is it open to family members to comeand have a look? when is the best day/evening for that?

  7. Absolutely - it's a 'bring everyone' occasion! If you get your new edits to me by the end of next week, that would be great :-)

  9. Holy crap!
I've only just got your voicemail Phil :s
But as its 10 O'clock I'm guessing it would be a bit silly to ring now...

With regards to the stuff needs to be at 300dpi I made a bit of a fatal error and only made my concept stuff at 72dpi...
The wireframe stuff is no trouble I'll start busting it out now, but what do you want me to do about all my concept stuff?
Could just raise the resolution to 300dpi and then try and work over it to crisp everything up a bit, but doing that for all my images its going to take much longer than a day!

Let me know asap (I understand it's late and doubt anyones going to be checking this at this time but think I've still got your number in my phone from Berlin Phil so I may drop u a text!)

  10. Just seen the post times on the above coments :) Maybe you are still up Phil :P

  11. @ Dan - take some time - you're still (over)reacting. Trust me on this.

@ James - yes - still awake: regarding your concept art stuff, just give me everything on a disc at whatever dpi and let me take a look at it - screenprinting can be a forgiving medium; regarding the wireframes, just ensure that as images, they are beautiful/striking/bold in their own right... Come in tomorrow and give me a disc - cheers.

  13. Keep your chin up Dan mate

This is a little random but my Dad always used to tell me when I was learning to drive
'You don't learn to drive until you pass your test'
May sound like bollocks but it's true.
Far as I see same goes with this in my opinion.

None of us are industry standard or anywhere near as good as like the people that work for all the big studios and stuff.

But uni is just a stepping stone now is when you really start learning n getting your skills up and showing what your made of.
Over this last year I feel like I've been skimming over so much because I'm gunning for a deadline, when I just want to sit down and play and learn really.
Nows the time to do that far as I can see.

But what the hell is the point in just giving up when you've spent the last 3 year working your ass off.
As that means you've just put in all that work for nothing and while your at it flushed 3k down the toilet!
Stuff that! Have some ambition and keep going mate!
Another little saying, think this came from some film but makes loads of sence:
'What doesn't kill us makes us stronger'
    ;)

  14. Also Phil is it alright if I drop everything in for around 3ish as I've been driving all day today and I'm absolutley knackered!?
So I don't really want to touch up my concept stuff while I feel like this, as I'll only stuff it up!
Sorry for spamming this thread like a madman to! :P

  16. Hi Guys,

I've just read this post and feel obliged to post a reply both to those heading to New Designers and those not. However it is 22:30 it has been a long day so I will reserve comment till the morning when I will be able to be coherent in a non-ramblish kind of way.

    So till the morning adios

  17. Dan, seriously don't be down on yourself now, I'll drop by your blog tomorrow and give you some time then, trust me it is not as bad as you think unless of course you do give up that is. I'll communicate via your blog unless you have another more personal means I am on facebook and blogger etc. just wait till the morning ok?

  18. With regards to the stuff being screen printing
when you say grayscale do you mean actual grey scale or black and white for like oldskool screen printing? Or both?
I'm just thinking in terms of getting the most out of the prints
As so far I've got a bit of a combination of both.
    Imput appriciated!
    :)

  20. Okay Dan - what I need you to do is to write formally to me - an actual hardcopy letter - in which you express your wish for your animation not to be shown at the internal degree show. The tone of the letter should be civil and should simply request that your animation not be shown. I will personally see that it isn't. There is still time to reconsider your current course of action - though it's too late for your blog - which you've very unwisely decided to delete. I am going to freeze the comments option on this specific post, as I am worried you might, in time, regret any further continuation of this thread. I am also going to suggest that you arrange with me - via email - an opportunity to discuss your feelings further. Am I to assume that it is also your intention to not participate in your own graduation ceremony? Again, I strongly advise you to take a moment to think carefully about your current situation before making any further decisions.

I expect to hear from you, Dan - but not on here.
