Maya Advice Please

Can anyone suggest why I can't get my chrome to look like chrome when I render please?
Is it something to do with the light? The floor? If I have the wrong settings? Raytrace is on this time, thats where I had the problem last time. It has some shine in the render but it's still awful. I will be placing the chair in an alternative scene eventually but shouldn't it be all set up looking correct for when I do put it in there?

  1. for chrome to work it needs an environement to reflect currently its reflecting your black background.

  2. What the dude above said, I believe you can make a 3D Sky node in Hypershade, connect a texture to that, and then go to your camera's Environment node (which should be pure black) and middle mouse drag the 3D Sky node into the Environment node on the camera. When you render it should render that environment as a reflection instead of a solid colour.

  3. Hi Nat

    Chrome.

    Using a Blinn...

    1) Colour Dark Blue / Black
    2) Eccentricity = 0.1
    3) Specular Roll Off = 0.9
    4) Specular Colour (Double click on the colour swatch) and set the colour to white and the Value (v) to 1.8
    5) Set the Reflectivity to 1
    6) Reflected Colour - In the Hypershade create a 'Env Sphere' node (Env Textures tab - Left Side)
    7) Middle mouse drag this onto the 'Reflected Color' channel on the Blinn.
    8) Reselect the 'Env Sphere' and connect an image into the 'Image' channel. This should be an environment image such as a sky or interior dome.
    9) Make sure you have Ray Tracing turned on in the render preferences.

FYI - Did you go back and look at the tutorials - Pirates Cove & Common Shaders? This information is there for you to go back to rather than posting, waiting, and wasting valuable time.
