There is a lake in Tanzania that has such a chemical imbalance that it causes any creature that touches it to turn to stone...
Photographer, Nick Brandt, explained that "petrified creatures pepper the area around the lake due to its constant pH of 9 to 10.5—an extremely basic alkalinity that preserves these creatures for eternity.” Not quite stone, these animals decay so rapidly that they can be found completely intact along the rivers edge. On discovering the animal bodies Brandt placed a chosen few in positions that they would have been in had they been living. It's made for some very eerie images...
