  2. Ok, I'm going to weigh in early...I do agree that recent Disney / Pixar stuff looks kind of horrid. I know I'm not the audience they are after, but from a visual standpoint, it just makes me feel dead inside. However, I don't think it is necessarily an art problem. A lot of "art books" for Pixar / Disney / Dreamworks etc have really amazing stuff happening in preproduciton. They have amazing artists producing really great work, and then along the way, things become more bland, generic and safe. This is the killer. Things always become safe, because safe sells. People like safe. They want to go and see the Pixar film they know, so that they can be guaranteed a lovely time that will make them happy to be alive.

Despite how crappy I think it all looks, I can understand why. They are betting millions of dollars on a movie, and they need to make sure it succeeds. A few years ago I would have been up in arms at the problem, but these days, I understand why it happens. I don't like it, but it's the way of the world. So, instead of looking to mega studios for innovation or creativity, fuck 'em. Let's look to the smaller guys. We just have to hope for other, smaller studio animation to take the lead here. As Disney once said, "It's the circle of life." We just have to hope that the smaller, interesting places don't also become giant businesses, because that isn't the sort of culture that produces something truly great.

  3. I agree with Jordan. I can't remember where I've seen it but there was an interview (with Bioware I think) where one creative director said that part of the pressure to do this comes from the producers who are mentally calculating how much money the direction will make them and will raise or lower the projected quantity based on what they hear.

Personally I think hoping the smaller companies don't become giant corporate machines that print repetition may be wishful thinking. Apple started out as three guys making home-built computers and Steve Jobs has been considered one of the great innovaters of the 20th/21st century. Since the 2000s they've been part of the group that is big, safe, business.

It would be nice if the small studios curbed the trend, sure, but that is the metaphorical circle of life - small innovative studios become mega-studios printing safety who are eventually be outshone by new smaller studios who eventually become safety-printers themselves.

  4. Oh please. That gif is so fast and even still I can see the differences. I'm a fan of what disney do, there's plenty of stuff out there to watch and consume. To love and hate. If it's not for you then don't give it your time or money. But to say it's horrid undermines all of the awesome work that some amazing artists put into those flicks. Production is hard and vision gets watered down at times, bit what they produce is hearfelt and a visual delight. P.s Big Hero 6 and Frozen were awesome.
